Are birkenstocks in wide width really comfortable?

I had some in college but my feet seemed to swim in them a bit. but they were so comfy. i have narrow width now but they hurt my feet. i'm going to try wide width. is softbed or regular best? I"m going for Arizona birks, in taupe suede.
