Can I swim without a tampon?

Today I'm going to the lake with my friends and I''m on my period and I HATE wearing tampons. I heard that your peiod stops while you swim, and that usually happens for me. Do you think it will be ok? I'm wearing a black bathing suit and I'm swimming in a lake so I don't think it will be noticeable..what do you think? Thanks
