That's a great hypothetical question. You're right. Without going into the radical left or right point of views, the Earth is running out of resources, and whether or not global warming is real, the human population will die out. Water wont' become the next oil because the leading invention the world needs in the future will be a desalination formula to clean the water. The population boom is controlled (roughly) by the diseases such as cancer, HIV, AIDs, and other deadly diseases. That's why unfortunately the Plague was beneficial to Europe. It's the circle of life, and in 100 years or 10 years there will be a global pandemic to decrease the population. It sounds bad but if it doesn't happen, we will fall into the scenario you depicted above.
