Do you have to wear a triathlon wet suit in a triathlon can you just wear a normal ordinary wet suit?

What is the point of buying a �200 tri wet suit when you can buy a �50 pound one? How does it make a difference? I am thinking of getting a �50 one for triathlons do you think i should?
